The ending of a marriage is not only the separation of two adults who no longer want to be married; it is a complete restructuring of all aspects of a family’s life. It significantly affects each family member. When children are involved, no matter how well the adults may try to hide what is going on, children know. They hear, see and feel everything. How you choose to handle a divorce will dramatically affect your family for years to come.
I have been an attorney for over 20 years. Since 1996, I have exclusively handled family law cases. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of intense and emotionally infused cases. Even relatively simple cases have become huge ugly nightmares. The end result of all this litigation is two people who are filled with anger and hate toward one another. Frequently, the children are the ones who suffer the greatest emotional harm.
I work directly with you and your spouse to fairly and equitably resolve your issues including, but not limited to, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, and division of property. Meetings only take place with both parties present. As I do not represent you or your spouse, I am able to remain neutral.
The mediation process is confidential. Nothing that is discussed, nor any documents prepared for mediation purposes, can be used in any court proceeding. The reason for this confidentiality is to ensure the process is as open and honest as possible.
When the process is successful, my office will prepare the legal documents necessary to finalize the dissolution, and neither party will ever set foot in the courthouse.
In addition to the emotional stress caused by litigation, families also find themselves saddled with a huge financial burden.
In this geographical area, the average hourly rate for an attorney is $225.00-$300.00. If both parties have legal representation, you can double that rate ($450.00-$600.00 per hour). If there is significant disagreement, you can multiply that hourly rate many times over. It’s not uncommon to see attorney’s fees of $10,000.00 - $20,000.00, and that is for each attorney!
The divorcing parties end up spending a huge amount of energy and significantly depleting their financial resources, only to end up angry and disillusioned.
Wouldn’t it be better to spend those resources working toward a more positive solution?
If you are interested in the mediation process and would like more information, I offer an initial consultation at a reduced rate. During the appointment, I will answer questions regarding the process and provide you and your spouse with additional information so you are able to make an informed decision.
Over the years, I have helped many couples resolve their issues amicably. More than 90 percent have been able to resolve all of their issues without court intervention. These people have come out of the process able to be civil to one another, and happy with the outcome. People tend to be more satisfied and comply with the terms of a divorce agreement they helped create, as opposed to an order that is forced on them by the court.
If, after starting the mediation process, the parties feel there is a necessity for court intervention, each is free to opt-out.
